General Music Program Overview

KINDERGARTEN

PERCEPTION & RESPONSE

  • Students learn to recognize and respond in time to a steady beat through clapping, marching and playing non-pitched percussion instruments.
  • Students learn to hear and replicate basic quarter and eighth-note rhythmic patterns and perform them on non-pitched percussion instruments in both individual and group settings.
  • Students will learn to identify basic variances in musical style such as soft/loud, fast/slow, high/low and same/different through a myriad of activities and games.
  • Students will begin learning pitch awareness through the use of their singing voices.
 EXPRESSION & PERFORMANCE
  • Students will learn and sing songs from the repertoires of Christian worship music and folk and children's songs from various cultures.
  • Students will participate in two stage performances in a unison choir setting.

GRADE 1

PERCEPTION & RESPONSE

  • Students will expand their rhythmic experience of quarter and eighth-note patterns by notation as well as replication. The performance and notation of half notes and whole notes are also added within the concepts of meter and phrasing.
  • Students will learn to identify three musical tones "So, Mi and La," and utilize them in performance through singing and playing on Orff instruments, handbells, etc.
  • Students will learn to identify selected instruments from various musical families.

EXPRESSION & PERFORMANCE

  • Students will experience composition by combining the rhythms and melodic tones they have learned.
  • Students will learn to read and write pre-staff examples of music notation.
  • Students will participate in two stage performances involving unison choir and speaking parts.

HISTORY & CULTURE

  • Students will sing and listen to songs of diverse cultures
  • Students will hear music by great composers and artists from various historical periods.

GRADE 2

PERCEPTION & RESPONSE

  • Rhythm skills are developed through more complex music utilizing the quarter, eighth, half and whole note patterns in notation as well as replication. New concepts such as dotted-notes and tied notes are incorporated as well.
  • Melodies are expanded to pentatonic patterns by adding the musical tones "Re" and "Do" along with "So, Mi and La." In addition to singing and playing these melodies on Orff instruments and hand bells, basic piano key recognition and technique are introduced.
  • Students are introduced to the basics of musical form in composition.
  • Students learn to identify a greater spectrum of instruments from various musical families.

EXPRESSION & PERFORMANCE

  • Students will experience composition by combining the rhythms and melodic tones they have learned.
  • Students will read and write pre-staff examples of rhythmic and melodic notation.
  • Students will participate in two stage performances involving unison choir and speaking parts.

HISTORY & CULTURE

  • Students will sing and listen to songs of diverse cultures

GRADE 3

PERCEPTION & RESPONSE

  • Rhythm skills are expanded to include sixteenth-note variants and dotted-quarter and eighth-note patterns.
  • Melodies are increased from 5-note pentatonic patterns to full octave range pentatonic and full major scale melodies.
  • Staff and directional reading skills are now applied to definitive pitch references (not just solfege) and the five-line staff and treble clef is introduced.
  • Students will read and write single staff examples of rhythmic and melodic notation.

EXPRESSION & PERFORMANCE

  • Students learn to play the recorder in the third quarter as an application of their new skills to hands-on music making.
  • Students will experience composition by applying their knowledge of staff notation with creative melodic and rhythmic ideas.
  • Students will participate in two stage performances involving unison choir and narrative and/or dramatic speaking roles.

HISTORY & CULTURE

  • Students will sing and listen to songs of diverse cultures
  • Students will listen to and discuss music by great composers and artists from various historical periods.

 
GRADE 4

PERCEPTION & RESPONSE

  • Students are exposed to more complex rhythmic examples and activities incorporating sixteenth-note variants and dotted-quarter and eighth-note patterns.
  • Full scale and pentatonic melodies are performed and analyzed, and accidentals (sharps, flats and naturals) and key signatures are introduced.
  • Note reading and writing skills are further developed through exercises and drills

EXPRESSION & PERFORMANCE

  • Students will continue developing their playing skills on the recorder, keyboard, handbells and Orff instruments.
  • Students will experience composition by applying their knowledge of staff notation with creative melodic and rhythmic ideas.
  • Part singing is introduced through call & response, rounds, partner songs, and homophonic and polyphonic vocal works.
  • Students will participate in two stage performances involving unison/2-part choir and narrative and/or dramatic speaking roles.

HISTORY & CULTURE

  • Students will sing and listen to songs of diverse cultures
  • Students will listen to and discuss music by great composers and artists from various historical periods.

 
GRADE 5

PERCEPTION & RESPONSE

  • Students are exposed to more complex rhythms and meter signatures through various examples and activities incorporating sixteenth-notes and dotted-note patterns.
  • Full scale major, minor and chromatic melodies are introduced, performed and analyzed, along with basic key signatures.
  • Note reading and writing skills are expanded with the introduction of the bass clef.

EXPRESSION & PERFORMANCE

  • Students will continue developing their playing skills on the recorder, keyboard, hand bells and Orff instruments.
  • Students will experience composition by applying their knowledge of staff notation with creative melodic and rhythmic ideas.
  • Part singing skills are reinforced through call & response, rounds, partner songs, and homophonic and polyphonic vocal works.
  • Students will participate in two stage performances involving unison/2-part choir and narrative and/or dramatic speaking roles.
  • Students are given the opportunity to begin a band instrument.

HISTORY & CULTURE

  • Students will sing and listen to songs of diverse cultures
  • Students will listen to and discuss music by great composers and artists from various historical periods.
GRADE 6

PERCEPTION & RESPONSE

  • Rhythm skills are further developed through the use of percussion instruments such as the snare drum, bass drum and drum set.
  • Full scale major, minor and chromatic melodies are performed and analyzed, with additional key signatures.
  • Note reading and writing skills in treble and bass clef are reinforced through exercises and drills.

EXPRESSION & PERFORMANCE

  • Students are introduced to the guitar and continue developing their playing skills on the recorder, keyboard, hand bells and Orff instruments.
  • Students will experience composition by applying their knowledge of staff notation with creative melodic and rhythmic ideas.
  • Part singing skills are reinforced through homophonic and polyphonic vocal works.
  • Students will participate in two stage performances involving unison/2-part choir and narrative and/or dramatic acting and speaking roles.
  • Students are encouraged to begin a band instrument.

HISTORY & CULTURE

  • Students will sing and listen to songs of diverse cultures
  • Students will listen to and discuss compositions by Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern/Eclectic composers.

GRADE 7

PERCEPTION & RESPONSE

  • Students develop and demonstrate rhythm skills on percussion instruments such as the snare drum, bass drum and drum set.
  • Music theory concepts of chords and scales are introduced.

 EXPRESSION & PERFORMANCE

  • Students demonstrate music reading and knowledge of chord skills on the guitar, keyboard, and other instruments.
  • Students demonstrate music writing skills by applying their knowledge of staff notation with creative melodic and rhythmic ideas.
  • Two and three-part singing skills are reinforced through homophonic and polyphonic vocal works.
  • Students will participate in two stage performances involving unison/2-part and /or 3-part choir and dramatic acting and speaking roles.

 HISTORY & CULTURE

  • Students will sing and listen to songs of diverse cultures
  • Students will listen to and discuss compositions by Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern/Eclectic composers and music of various American styles and genres.

 
GRADE 8

PERCEPTION & RESPONSE

  • Students develop and demonstrate rhythm skills on percussion instruments such as the snare drum, bass drum and drum set.
  • More advanced music theory concepts of chords and scales are introduced and developed.

 EXPRESSION & PERFORMANCE

  • Students demonstrate music reading and knowledge of chords on the guitar, keyboard and other instruments.
  • Students demonstrate music writing skills by applying their knowledge of staff notation with creative melodic and rhythmic ideas.
  • Two and three-part singing skills are further developed through homophonic and polyphonic vocal works.
  • Students will participate in two stage performances involving unison/2-part and /or 3-part choir and dramatic acting and speaking roles.

 HISTORY & CULTURE

  • Students will sing and listen to songs of diverse cultures
  • Students will listen to and discuss compositions by Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern/Eclectic composers and music of various American styles and genres
