
General Music Program Overview
PERCEPTION &
RESPONSE
- Students
learn to recognize and respond in time to a steady beat through clapping,
marching and playing non-pitched percussion instruments.
- Students
learn to hear and replicate basic quarter and eighth-note rhythmic
patterns and perform them on non-pitched percussion instruments in both
individual and group settings.
- Students
will learn to identify basic variances in musical style such as soft/loud,
fast/slow, high/low and same/different through a myriad of activities and
games.
- Students
will begin learning pitch awareness through the use of their singing
voices.
EXPRESSION
& PERFORMANCE
- Students
will learn and sing songs from the repertoires of Christian worship music and
folk and children's songs from various cultures.
- Students
will participate in two stage performances in a unison choir setting.
PERCEPTION &
RESPONSE
- Students
will expand their rhythmic experience of quarter and eighth-note patterns
by notation as well as replication. The performance and notation of half
notes and whole notes are also added within the concepts of meter and
phrasing.
- Students
will learn to identify three musical tones "So, Mi and La," and utilize
them in performance through singing and playing on Orff instruments,
handbells, etc.
- Students
will learn to identify selected instruments from various musical families.
EXPRESSION
& PERFORMANCE
- Students
will experience composition by combining the rhythms and melodic tones
they have learned.
- Students
will learn to read and write pre-staff examples of music notation.
- Students
will participate in two stage performances involving unison choir and
speaking parts.

will sing and listen to songs of diverse cultures

will hear music by great composers and artists from various historical
periods.
PERCEPTION &
RESPONSE
- Rhythm
skills are developed through more complex music utilizing the quarter,
eighth, half and whole note patterns in notation as well as replication.
New concepts such as dotted-notes and tied notes are incorporated as well.
- Melodies
are expanded to pentatonic patterns by adding the musical tones "Re" and
"Do" along with "So, Mi and La." In addition to singing and playing these
melodies on Orff instruments and hand bells, basic piano key recognition
and technique are introduced.
- Students
are introduced to the basics of musical form in composition.
- Students
learn to identify a greater spectrum of instruments from various musical
families.

- Students

skills are expanded to include sixteenth-note variants and dotted-quarter
and eighth-note patterns.

are increased from 5-note pentatonic patterns to full octave range
pentatonic and full major scale melodies.
- Staff
and directional reading skills are now applied to definitive pitch
references (not just solfege) and the five-line staff and treble clef is
introduced.
- Students
will read and write single staff examples of rhythmic and melodic
notation.
EXPRESSION
& PERFORMANCE
- Students
learn to play the recorder in the third quarter as an application of their
new skills to hands-on music making.
- Students
will experience composition by applying their knowledge of staff notation
with creative melodic and rhythmic ideas.

and/or dramatic speaking roles.
